Sinopsis

Preamble: Good afternoon and welcome to guardian.co.uk's coverage of day two of this year's Tour. After yesterday's dramatic first stage, where Alberto Contador lost 1min 20sec after being held up in a crash, we - or at least the Tour does, I'm stuck in an office in King's Cross - head to Les Essarts for the team time trial. 23km of painful, hooter-to-the-pedals, flat-out grinding. This will certainly will be a target for Team Sky, who have two of the best pursuiters in the world in Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas, but Mark Cavendish's HTC-Highroad and David Millar's Garmin-Carvelo are the two teams the bookies make favourites.

1.30pm: We're off! Alberto Contador's Saxo Bank team are the first off, on what is a cloudy and blustery day. Euskaltel will race 2nd, followed by Vacansoleil, with Team Sky 15th of the 22 teams. Each team, incidentally, goes off at seven-minute intervals...

1.37pm The Spanish Euskaltel team, resplendent in Johan-Cruyff-era oranje, are the second team underway. Meanwhile, it's good to see Nicolas Roche is back writing his column for the Irish Independent, having last year confessed to wanting to punch a team-mate's lights out. In his first column he writes:

Even though I haven't had as many results as last year, I actually feel stronger coming into this Tour. I have only one UCI point to my name this year, from my fifth place on the opening stage of the Dauphine. That's 115 points less than John Gadret and 70 less than Jean-Christophe Peraud, but the team has faith in me as leader for this Tour and I feel the guys are really behind me, which is great motivation. That's why maybe this year when I talk, I have a bit more self-confidence, because I know the team is really behind me. Although my season has been disrupted a lot, I still hope for a top 10 overall. A short extract:

After nine months on the diet, Zabriskie says he's feeling better than ever. He has had some of the best results of his career and says he feels more focused. "I think a lot of people see food in terms of whether it's going to make them fat or make them skinny," he says. "I'm seeing food in terms of how it's going to make me think and will it give me clarity." Zabriskie says he's noticed that even small ailments, like canker sores and a persistent rash he used to get, have all gone away. Even his vision has improved, he says. This winter, Zabriskie's team director, Jonathan Vaughters, caught wind of his new diet and gave him a call. Vaughters was concerned the diet would lower Zabriskie's iron intake, which is crucial for endurance athletes. He told Zabriskie that he could try the diet, so long as he took regular blood tests to monitor his level of ferritin, the protein that stores iron. He said Zabriskie should eat more dark, leafy greens and other sources of iron. Vaughters says he's fine with the diet, so long as the results are good. "At the end of the day, I just want him to go fast." Vaughters says he was surprised when blood tests early this season showed Zabriskie's ferritin levels had remained stable on the vegan diet—which means his hemoglobin and red blood cell counts also remained normal. He says he's been pleasantly surprised by his performance. "He's won more time trials this year than he has in his career," Vaughters says. "The proof is in the pudding." ... Zabriskie also consulted with a professional motorcycle racer, Ben Bostrom, also a vegan, who advised Zabriskie to include small amounts of fish a couple of times a week because of the incredibly large load he puts on his body during training. "He told me, don't get too hung up on the word 'vegan'," says Zabriskie. The fish, Zabriskie says, helps his body absorb certain vitamins and iron.

2.51pm: Not long before Sky go out for those of you asking. Radioshack attacked with a stranded Contador and Sanchez. Throwing my mind back to last year stage 15, why was it such an issue when Contador attacked Schleck and it was a mistake on Schleck's part to change gears while attacking? My issue is not with Contador losing time, as I believe if he is left behind on one stage it will make for an interesting race as he is just so strong but Sammy Sanchez doesn't have to pay because a fan stood too close to the peloton. Then again the daddy army of Radioshack don't have any realistic podium contenders (yes Leipheimer won the Tour de Suisse but there are some mighty mountains stages in the Tour and Schleck, Contador, Gesink, VDB and even Sammy should open big gaps to them) and are fighting Garmin Cervelo for the team classification. (July 4th)
Do Americans actually understand their own history?

As The United States of America celebrates Independence Day an important question has been raised by many historians across the world. Do Americans actually understand their own history? Are schools in America teaching their children the right events or are politician's confusing youngsters with their constant mistakes over how and why the United States gained its independence from Great Britain. Studies are constantly showing that American's are unaware of what they are actually celebrating.

The question that must be asked is does history matter? Of course history matters, history is important because it relates the social experience of our people in concrete and detailed form. It deals with specific and unique events instead of with averages and abstractions. It is interested in the experiences of groups of ordinary individuals as well as in the achievements of extraordinary persons. History arranges its materials in chronological order and thus is naturally led to stress the concepts of change and continuity, of development and decay.

A 2007 poll conducted by the U.S Mint revealed some very worrying results. 26 per cent of the people polled did not know that the United States gained its independence from Great Britain. Even more worrying was the fact that six per cent of the people polled chose a different country. The countries included China,
France, Japan Mexico and Spain. In the same poll, it showed that only seven per cent of those surveyed could name the first four presidents in order: George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Thirty per cent knew that Jefferson was the third president, 57 per cent identified Jefferson as the main author of the Declaration of Independence, and 57 per cent knew that Washington led the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.It must be time to panic in relation to what American's know about their own history. Politicians must take responsibility; especially when it comes to the mistakes of the Tea Party. The movements darling, Herman Cain announced his candidacy for the U.S Presidency and cited words from the U.S Constitution to enforce his points. However the passage he was reading from was the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution.

Further mistakes have embarrassed the movement. Sarah Palin's butchering of Paul Revere's role in the American Revolution or Michelle Bachmann's truly revisionist mangling of the facts to claim that the founding father's tried to abolish slavery is truly shocking. The disdain for knowledge, facts and learning is something the Tea Party and the American right can't hide behind.

The movement has got American history wrong on so many occasions but instead of admitting their mistakes they have continued to confuse the population. Supporters of both Palin and Bachmann edited the Wikipedia page on Paul Revere and John Quincy Adams to reflect their mistakes. To try and cover over such horrendous mistakes is criminal and the two must be held to account.

The materials of history cannot be understood if the content of other subjects has not been studied. The lessons of history cannot be applied if they are not given direction and meaning by the other social studies and the other fields of human knowledge. by. Thomas Costelle
Sinopsis:
Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he's worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves...often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson: when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live.
If you haven't heard of these terms already, you undoubtedly will as you begin to invest.

The Bulls
A bull market is when everything in the economy is great, people are finding jobs, gross domestic product (GDP) is growing, and stocks are rising. Things are just plain rosy! Picking stocks during a bull market is easier because everything is going up. Bull markets cannot last forever though, and sometimes they can lead to dangerous situations if stocks become overvalued. If a person is optimistic and believes that stocks will go up, he or she is called a "bull" and is said to have a "bullish outlook".

The Bears
A bear market is when the economy is bad, recession is looming and stock prices are falling. Bear markets make it tough for investors to pick profitable stocks. One solution to this is to make money when stocks are falling using a technique called short selling. Another strategy is to wait on the sidelines until you feel that the bear market is nearing its end, only starting to buy in anticipation of a bull market. If a person is pessimistic, believing that stocks are going to drop, he or she is called a "bear" and said to have a "bearish outlook".

The Other Animals on the Farm - Chickens and Pigs
Chickens are afraid to lose anything. Their fear overrides their need to make profits and so they turn only to money-market securities or get out of the markets entirely. While it's true that you should never invest in something over which you lose sleep, you are also guaranteed never to see any return if you avoid the market completely and never take any risk,

Pigs are high-risk investors looking for the one big score in a short period of time. Pigs buy on hot tips and invest in companies without doing their due diligence. They get impatient, greedy, and emotional about their investments, and they are drawn to high-risk securities without putting in the proper time or money to learn about these investment vehicles. Professional traders love the pigs, as it's often from their losses that the bulls and bears reap their profits.

What Type of Investor Will You Be?
There are plenty of different investment styles and strategies out there. Even though the bulls and bears are constantly at odds, they can both make money with the changing cycles in the market. Even the chickens see some returns, though not a lot. The one loser in this picture is the pig.

Make sure you don't get into the market before you are ready. Be conservative and never invest in anything you do not understand. Before you jump in without the right knowledge, think about this old stock market saying:

"Bulls make money, bears make money, but pigs just get slaughtered!"

Source

adiithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13055525635981793453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1288277675666646838.post-34697393650118534272011-07-03T00:16:00.000-07:002011-07-03T00:27:03.921-07:00Stocks Basics: How to Read A Stock Table/QuoteAny financial paper has stock quotes that will look something like the image below:

Columns 1 & 2: 52-Week High and Low - These are the highest and lowest prices at which a stock has traded over the previous 52 weeks (one year). This typically does not include the previous day's trading.

Column 3: Company Name & Type of Stock - This column lists the name of the company. If there are no special symbols or letters following the name, it is common stock. Different symbols imply different classes of shares. For example, "pf" means the shares are preferred stock.

Column 4: Ticker Symbol - This is the unique alphabetic name which identifies the stock. If you watch financial TV, you have seen the ticker tape move across the screen, quoting the latest prices alongside this symbol. If you are looking for stock quotes online, you always search for a company by the ticker symbol. If you don't know what a particular company's ticker is you can search for it at: http://finance.yahoo.com/l.

Column 5: Dividend Per Share - This indicates the annual dividend payment per share. If this space is blank, the company does not currently pay out dividends.

Column 6: Dividend Yield - The percentage return on the dividend. Calculated as annual dividends per share divided by price per share.

Column 7: Price/Earnings Ratio - This is calculated by dividing the current stock price by earnings per share from the last four quarters. For more detail on how to interpret this, see our P/E Ratio tutorial.

Column 8: Trading Volume - This figure shows the total number of shares traded for the day, listed in hundreds. To get the actual number traded, add "00" to the end of the number listed.

Column 9 & 10: Day High and Low - This indicates the price range at which the stock has traded at throughout the day. In other words, these are the maximum and the minimum prices that people have paid for the stock.

Column 11: Close - The close is the last trading price recorded when the market closed on the day. If the closing price is up or down more than 5% than the previous day's close, the entire listing for that stock is bold-faced. Keep in mind, you are not guaranteed to get this price if you buy the stock the next day because the price is constantly changing (even after the exchange is closed for the day). The close is merely an indicator of past performance and except in extreme circumstances serves as a ballpark of what you should expect to pay.

Column 12: Net Change - This is the dollar value change in the stock price from the previous day's closing price. When you hear about a stock being "up for the day," it means the net change was positive.

Quotes on the Internet
Nowadays, it's far more convenient for most to get stock quotes off the Internet. This method is superior because most sites update throughout the day and give you more information, news, charting, research, etc.

To get quotes, simply enter the ticker symbol into the quote box of any major financial site like Yahoo! Finance, CBS Marketwatch, or MSN Moneycentral. The example below shows a quote for Microsoft (MSFT) from Yahoo Finance. Interpreting the data is exactly the same as with the newspaper.

adiithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13055525635981793453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1288277675666646838.post-29325758880825716562011-07-03T00:15:00.001-07:002011-07-03T00:16:06.165-07:00Stocks Basics: Buying StocksYou've now learned what a stock is and a little bit about the principles behind the stock market, but how do you actually go about buying stocks? Thankfully, you don't have to go down into the trading pit yelling and screaming your order. There are two main ways to purchase stock:

1. Using a Brokerage
The most common method to buy stocks is to use a brokerage. Brokerages come in two different flavors. Full-service brokerages offer you (supposedly) expert advice and can manage your account; they also charge a lot. Discount brokerages offer little in the way of personal attention but are much cheaper.

At one time, only the wealthy could afford a broker since only the expensive, full-service brokers were available. With the internet came the explosion of online discount brokers. Thanks to them nearly anybody can now afford to invest in the market.

2. DRIPs & DIPs
Dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs) and direct investment plans (DIPs) are plans by which individual companies, for a minimal cost, allow shareholders to purchase stock directly from the company. Drips are a great way to invest small amounts of money at regular intervals.

Source

adiithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13055525635981793453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1288277675666646838.post-40018963171568110042011-07-03T00:12:00.000-07:002011-07-03T00:14:32.211-07:00Stocks Basics: How Stocks TradeMost stocks are traded on exchanges, which are places where buyers and sellers meet and decide on a price. Some exchanges are physical locations where transactions are carried out on a trading floor. You've probably seen pictures of a trading floor, in which traders are wildly throwing their arms up, waving, yelling, and signaling to each other. The other type of exchange is virtual, composed of a network of computers where trades are made electronically.

The purpose of a stock market is to facilitate the exchange of securities between buyers and sellers, reducing the risks of investing. Just imagine how difficult it would be to sell shares if you had to call around the neighborhood trying to find a buyer. Really, a stock market is nothing more than a super-sophisticated farmers' market linking buyers and sellers.

Before we go on, we should distinguish between the primary market and the secondary market. The primary market is where securities are created (by means of an IPO) while, in the secondary market, investors trade previously-issued securities without the involvement of the issuing-companies. The secondary market is what people are referring to when they talk about the stock market. It is important to understand that the trading of a company's stock does not directly involve that company.

The New York Stock Exchange
The most prestigious exchange in the world is the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The "Big Board" was founded over 200 years ago in 1792 with the signing of the Buttonwood Agreement by 24 New York City stockbrokers and merchants. Currently the NYSE, with stocks like General Electric, McDonald's, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, Gillette and Wal-mart, is the market of choice for the largest companies in America.

The trading floor of the NYSE

The NYSE is the first type of exchange (as we referred to above), where much of the trading is done face-to-face on a trading floor. This is also referred to as a listed exchange. Orders come in through brokerage firms that are members of the exchange and flow down to floor brokers who go to a specific spot on the floor where the stock trades. At this location, known as the trading post, there is a specific person known as the specialist whose job is to match buyers and sellers. Prices are determined using an auction method: the current price is the highest amount any buyer is willing to pay and the lowest price at which someone is willing to sell. Once a trade has been made, the details are sent back to the brokerage firm, who then notifies the investor who placed the order. Although there is human contact in this process, don't think that the NYSE is still in the stone age: computers play a huge role in the process.

The Nasdaq
The second type of exchange is the virtual sort called an over-the-counter (OTC) market, of which the Nasdaq is the most popular. These markets have no central location or floor brokers whatsoever. Trading is done through a computer and telecommunications network of dealers. It used to be that the largest companies were listed only on the NYSE while all other second tier stocks traded on the other exchanges. The tech boom of the late '90s changed all this; now the Nasdaq is home to several big technology companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, Dell and Oracle. This has resulted in the Nasdaq becoming a serious competitor to the NYSE.

The Nasdaq market site in Times Square

On the Nasdaq brokerages act as market makers for various stocks. A market maker provides continuous bid and ask prices within a prescribed percentage spread for shares for which they are designated to make a market. They may match up buyers and sellers directly but usually they will maintain an inventory of shares to meet demands of investors.

Other Exchanges
The third largest exchange in the U.S. is the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). The AMEX used to be an alternative to the NYSE, but that role has since been filled by the Nasdaq. In fact, the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), which is the parent of Nasdaq, bought the AMEX in 1998. Almost all trading now on the AMEX is in small-cap stocks and derivatives.

There are many stock exchanges located in just about every country around the world. American markets are undoubtedly the largest, but they still represent only a fraction of total investment around the globe. The two other main financial hubs are London, home of the London Stock Exchange, and Hong Kong, home of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The last place worth mentioning is the over-the-counter bulletin board (OTCBB). The Nasdaq is an over-the-counter market, but the term commonly refers to small public companies that don’t meet the listing requirements of any of the regulated markets, including the Nasdaq. The OTCBB is home to penny stocks because there is little to no regulation. This makes investing in an OTCBB stock very risky.

Source

adiithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13055525635981793453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1288277675666646838.post-2643354551625788322011-07-02T23:58:00.000-07:002011-07-03T00:02:27.655-07:00Stock Trading Tutorial: Setting Goals
This stock trading tutorial takes a slight departure from the standard mechanics of how stock trading actually works. I’d like to dive into a little bit of the mental side of stock trading. Once you have read through the basics on how to trade stocks, you can begin to formulate your goals for your personal stock trading. Having a well defined goal is essential in any pursuit, and that is especially true for day trading.

This will be an easy stock trading tutorial to understand, but a much harder one to implement. Balancing your effort in learning the stock market with your practice to make more money is never an easy task. I hope we can set you down the right path so you have the tools to set realistic goals for yourself.

The first key to setting effective goals is to strive for something you have control over. What I mean by that is to set a goal for yourself that you can accomplish no matter how the market happens to pan out. Set up a goal to practice stock trading for so many hours a day. Set up a goal to read about X number of trading strategies every week. Set a goal to observe the price action of the stock market for the first half hour of the day so many times a month. These are the types of goals that you can accomplish without ever having to make a profitable trade. While meeting these goals will not directly put money in your pocket, they will almost certainly increase your understanding of the stock market.

Becoming a stock trader takes more than just reading a solid stock market tutorial (although we think it helps quite a bit!). It takes a dedication to continuing your education as a trader. It takes a certain discipline to practice different techniques, and an open mind to learn from those mistakes. I suggest that everyone have a practice stock account that they can test out these new strategies. This practice account can either be a paper money account or an account that you fund knowing it may not be the most profitable. If you can treat a paper money account exactly how you would treat your own money then that is the much less expensive (and just as effective) option.

If you can find a way to motivate yourself to learn more about the stock market, you can’t help but to become more advanced in your stock trading. One word of caution here: if you are only reading and watching new strategies you will not learn nearly as fast. Stock trading takes real world experience. With the availability of practice stock trading software, there is no reason not to get your hands dirty. I hope everyone will join me in setting specific goals for their stock trading endeavors. If you have anything that you’d like to share with other readers feel free to leave your stock trading goals in the comments.

Source

adiithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13055525635981793453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1288277675666646838.post-61134577939668910832011-07-02T23:22:00.001-07:002011-07-02T23:22:45.069-07:00Hello world!!!
Hello world!!!
